KRIPALANI SHRI J. B., M.A., Ind., (Madhya Pradesh—Guna—1967): s. of Divan Bhagwandas Kripalani; b. at Hyderabad Sind, 1888; ed. at Bombay University; m. Shrimati Sucheta Das Kripalani; Khadi and Village Worker; Director, Shri Gandhi Ashram; Professor in Bihar Bhumikar College, Muzaffarpur, under the Calcutta University, 1912—17; joined Mahatma Gandhi in Champaran Satyagraha, 1917; worked as Private Secretary to late Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya, 1918; Professor of Politics, Banaras Hindu University, 1919-20; Acharya (Principal), Gujarat Vidyapeeth, 1922—27; General-Secretary, Indian National Congress, 1934—1946; President, Indian National Congress, 1946-47; founded "Vigil" a political weekly, 1950; formed the Congress Democratic Front, 1951; resigned from the Congress and formed K.M.P.P., 1951; Chairman, Kisan Mazdoor Praja Party for three years; Chairman, Praja Socialist Party for two and a half years; suffered imprisonment several times for participating in the freedom movement; Member, (1) Constituent Assembly, 1946—51; (2) Provisional Parliament 1950—52; (3) First Lok Sabha, 1952— 57; (4) Second Lok Sabha, 1957—62 and (5) Third Lok Sabha, 1963—67. Social activities:  Director, Sri Gandhi Ashram, engaged in khadi and village industry and village work generally throughout U.P., Delhi and parts of Madhya Pradesh.
