SINHA, SHRI PURNA NARAYAN, Janata, (Assam-(Tezpur—1977): s. of late Shri K. C. Sinha; b. at Tezpur, October 18, 1916; passed Matriculation and Inter-mediate in Arts from Calcutta University and Law Examination of Calcutta High Court, studying in M.A. (Pol. Sc). m. Smt. C. B. Sinha, 1943 2 s. and 1 d.; Agricultural, Advocate and Journalist, previously associated with the Congress, 1947-48 and Socialist Party, 1948—77; was under detention on four occasions including 14 months during the last emergency under Maintenance of Internal Security Act and lost property worth 7 acres of agricultural land; has been Municipal Commissioner, Tezpur from 1950; was Hon. Secretary, Ban Theatre; now President of Municipal Workers Union, Cotton Mill Workers Union, Tea Labour Union, Road Transport Workers' Union; Member, Assam Sahitya Sabha; presently Member, (i) Committee on the Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and (ii) Joint Committee on Salaries, and Allowances of Members of Parliament. Social activities: Established 7 villages of landless cultivators after agitating for the lands and worked for Harijan uplift and tribal welfare; propagating national integration of people living in Assam and other eastern States. Helped in starting Nationalist High School, Tezpur Academy and Tezpur Law College, Tezpur Girls' College, Tezpur Post-graduate Training College, besides various primary schools. Favourite pastime and recreation: Social work, reading and travelling; learning languages—already knows Assamese, Bengali, Hindi, English, Nepali, Adivasi, Oriya etc. Special interests: Agriculture, literary review and writing short stories. Publications: Founder and Chief Editor, Mahajati newsmagazine; wrote two books of verses and six small plays; contributed several articles and short stories to several magazines.
