[Congress (I)— Tamil Nadu, Tiruchendur 1984] s. of late Shri Kalinga Thusimuthu; b. at Arumughaneri, Tiruchendur Taluk, Tirunelveli District, December 22, 1915; studied upto S.S.L.C. ed. at St. Paul's High School, Veperi, Madras; m. Smt. Gomathi Devi, 1940; 3 s. and 1 d.; Agriculturist and Small Scale Industrialist participated in the freedom movement from an early age and was imprisoned for 4 1/2 years; President, (i) Arumughaneri Village Panchayat, (ii) Tiruchendur Taluk Congress Committee, (iii) Tirunelveli District Congress Committee for 15 years; General Secretary, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee for 3 years; Special invitee for A.I.C.C. Working Committee; President Salt Workers Union, 1935; Member, (i) Composite Madras State Legislative Assembly, 1946-56, (ii) Tamil Nadu Legislative Council, 1957-52, (iii) Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, 1962-67; Member, (i) Sixth Lok Sabha, 1977-79 (ii) Committee on Subordinate Legislation and (iii) Seventh Lok Sabha, 1980-84. Social activities: Before Temple Entry Act came into force, he got consent from Caste-Hindus for entry of Harijans in Tiruchendur Lord Muruga Temple; got lease for the entire salt factory in Arumughaneri in the name of workers and formed the pioneering Salt Workers Cooperative Society, Now the workers are the owners of the factory; collected Rs. 1.25 crores from the public of Tirunelveli for the construction of Manimuthar Dam, This was a novel example of voluntary effort, which stabilised 1.10 lakh acres of Thambiravarni Ayacut and brought 65,000 acres of land under irrigation. In 1954 at Nazareth started the first Rehabilitation Centre for Sri Lanka Repatriates. Most of the Directors are the repatriates and all the repatriates are the shareholders. Favourite pastime and recreation: Rural uplift and Harijan Welfare. Special interests: Establishment of small industries in rural areas; specially committed to scientific development being made applicable in country's rural development.
