JHA, SHRI KAMAL NATH [Confess (I)—Bihar, Saharsa, 1980] s. of Pandit Bishwa Nath Jha; b. at Bangoon Village, Saharsa District, August 15, 1923; ed. at Kishanganj High School and T.N.J. College, Bhagalpur, Studied upto B.A.; m. Smt. Usha Devi, 1940; 2s. and 3d.; Agriculturist; previously associated with Socialist Party; offered Satyagraha and courted arrest during College days; gave up studies and joined freedom movement in 1942; organized underground armed resistance force known as "Azad Dasta" in Purnea District, Bihar; was arrested as security prisoner under D.I.R. in 1944 and detained in Bhagalpur Central Jail and released in 1946; worked under Champaran Land Enquiry Commission 1950; organized and conducted Crop Shares movement and struggle in Purnea District and courted arrest thrice, 1952-57; Secretary, (i) All India Kisan Panchayat, 1950-53; (ii) Bihar Socialist Party, I954-56; (iii) Mahila College, Purnea since 1974; (iv) Purnea College, Purnea 1972-74; Member, Senate, Bhagalpur University, 1964-65; President, Jute Mazdoor Panchayat 1957-67; also President of a number of other Trade Unions; Member, Bihar Legislative Assembly, 1962-67; Member, Rajya Sabha, 1973-80; presently Member, Joint Committee on Salaries and Allowances of Members of Parliament.
