DURGA CHAND KANWAR, SHRI, B.A., Janata, (Himachal Pradesh—Kangra—1977):  s. of late Shri Mian Devi Chand; b. in September, 1922; ed. at D.A.V. College, Lahore (Pakistan); unmarried; Social and Political, Worker; previously associated with Jan Sangh, 1951—77; arrest-orders issued by the-British Government in 1947, went underground; was arrested during emergency and detained for 19 months; President, Kangra Valley Unit, Jan Sangh, for a number of years since 1951; Sarpanch, Vijaypur Panchayat; Chairman, Lambagaon Block Samiti; Member, (i) Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly, 1967—72 and 1972—77; Deputy Leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly; Member, (i) Public Accounts Committee, (ii) Estimates Committee, (iii) Government Assurances Committee, (iv) Land Reforms Committee; presently Member, Committee on Subordinate Legislation. Social activities:  Associated with schools and dispensaries.

Favourite pastime and recreation:  Touring countryside side meeting people.

Special interests:  Uplift of weaker sections of society and development of backward areas.

Publications:  Contributed a number of articles in journals.  At present engaged in writing Glimpses of Himachal Pradesh—Ancient and Modern.
