Question : FOUNDS TO ARCHAEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF INDIA (ASI)



(a) the amount made available to Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) for upkeep of monuments of historical interest annually;

(b) whether the said amount is adequate and being properly utilized for the purpose for which it is given; and

(c)

(c) if not, ther remedial steps being taken by the Government in this regard.

THE MINISTER OF CULTURE(SHRI ANANTH KUMAR)

(a) The allocation of funds for the amintenance, conservation preservation amd environmental development of monuments declared protected under ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958, during the last three tears us as under:-

1996-1997	Rs. 4888.03. lakhs,	1997-1998	Rs. 6465.90 lakhs,	1998-1999	Rs. 7440.99 lakhs.
The allocation of the current year is 8988.64 lakhs.

(b) The funds made available tot he Archaeological Survey of India are not commensurate with its multifarious activities and responsibilities. The allocations made, are utilised for the maintenance, conservation and development of the protected monuments.

(c) Various agencies such as the UNESCO, State Governments and its autonomous bodies have given funds for the conservation and development of specific monuments. Funds have also been received from the Corporate Sector for this purpose through the national Culture Fund.
