Question : INCREASED MILITARY PRESENCE OF CHINA ALONG INDIAN BORDERS



(a) whether a U.S. report has charged that China has increased its military presence in Tibet and on India`s northern border as part of an attempt to encircle India by a hostile coalition of forces directed and armed by China as published in various dailies on April 8, 2000;

(b) if so, whether the Government have analysed the threat perception for India and formulated any strategy to counter it; and

(c) if so, the details thereof?

(a) Government are aware of reports regarding a statement attributed to the Chairman of the House International Relations Committee of the U.S. Congress to this effect.

(b) & (c): Government keep a constant vigil on the threat on our borders and monitor all developments having a bearing on our national security. All necessary measures are taken to maintain appropriate defence preparedness.
