(b) : Coal reserves are notshrinking. Every year about 3 to 5 Bt. coal resources are added to the inventory of Indian coal resources and against this, about 0.65 Bt. coal is extracted.
(c): Yes Sir, the assessed coal reserves are adequate to meet the current demand.
Coal demand of the country, Production from CIL source and Supply from CIL source for last three years and current year is as below:
(Figures in Million tonnes)
Subjects 2012-13 Actual 2013-14
Actual 2014-15
Actual 2015-16 Target
Coal Production of the country 556.40 565.77 612.44 700
Domestic Supply. 567.60 572.49 607.85 700
(d):Following steps are being taken to increase the coal reserves , production of coal in the country and to reduce the import of coal:
• To increase the coal reserves in the country the Government has taken steps like enhanced exploration capacity through induction of modern equipment like Hydraulic Drilling and outsourcing.
• CIL has envisaged for doubling its coal production i.e. 1 Bt by 2019-20 from the current level of production i.e. 494.23 Mt in 2014-15 for meeting the coal demand of the country. So far, mines/projects to produce about 908.10 Mt in 2019-20 have been identified and further plans to augment production up to 1 Billion tonne are being developed.
• For the said purpose, a report has been prepared for assessment of the need for up-gradation of technology presently under practice in CIL mines and scope of further modernization.
• In order to maintain the planned growth in production and evacuation in future, CIL has undertaken three major Railway infrastructure projects to be executed by Indian Railways in growing coalfields of SECL, MCL, & CCL.
• High capacity mines are being planned with deployment of high capacity/ high productivity equipment in OC & UG mines of CIL.
• Efforts are being taken up by all sub-subsidiaries for obtaining EC/FC within the scheduled time frame so that projects could able to start production.
Inspite of the above steps, the entire demand of coal will not be met indigenously as supply of coking coal in the country is limited and certain power plants were designed on the basis of imported coal in earlier years.
