Answer given by the minister

MINISTER OF CONSUMER AFFAIRS, FOOD AND PUBLIC DISTRIBUTION ( SHRI SHARAD YADAV )

(a) to (f): A Statement is laid on the Table of the House.

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (a) to (f) OF STARRED QUESTION NO.176 DUE FOR ANSWER ON 29-11-2002 IN THE LOK SABHA.

(a)&(b): No, Sir.

(c) to (e): As on 30.09.2002, the installed capacity of the sugar industry was 174.43 lakh tonnes. The consumption of sugar during the season 2001-2002 was around 173.00 lakh tonnes. During the sugar season 2002-2003, the consumption of sugar is, however, expected at around 182.00 lakh tonnes as against the estimated production of 170.00 lakh tonnes. There is, however, no difficulty envisaged in this regard because of sizeable accumulation of stocks of sugar in the country.

(f): The quantum of sugar consumed and exported by the country during the last three sugar years is as under:-

Sugar Year	Consumption	Exported	(lakh tonnes)	(lakh tonnes)
1999-2000 159.77 0.23 2000-2001 162.45 9.87 2001-2002 173.04 10.00
