Question : Alleviation of Poverty

(a) whether the Government proposes to launch a campaign to alleviate poverty from all gram panchayats;

(b) if so, the total outstanding level of poverty;

(c) the total number of rural families proposed to be covered under the poverty alleviation campaign;

(d) the total number of villages from which poverty was alleviated, year-wise during the last three years; and

(e) the steps taken by the Government to alleviate poverty in rural areas along with the achievement made during the last three years and the current year, State/UT-wise?

(a) to (e) : The Ministry of rural Development is implementing various programmes, namely, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM), Indira Awaas Yojana (IAY) and National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP) for a sustainable and inclusive growth through a multi-pronged strategy for poverty alleviation by increasing livelihood opportunities, providing social safety net and developing infrastructure for growth and improvement of quality of life in rural India. These programmes are aimed at betterment of rural livelihoods and overall development of rural areas through creation of employment opportunities, infrastructures and providing social assistance to the rural poor. The target groups of the programmes are household/individual beneficiary. The State/UT-wise achievement made under these progremmes is annexed. As per the poverty estimates of erstwhile Planning Commission the percentage of persons living below the poverty line in rural India has come down to 25.7% in 2011-12 from 41.8% in 2004-05.
