Question : Special Courts



(a) the details of Special Courts set up to examine the cases pertaining to atrocities on Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in the country, including in Karnataka;
(b) the number of cases decided during the last three years in the country in the above courts, State-wise; and
(c) the details of the cases pending as on 31st December, 2016 in the country, State-wise?

(a) to (c): Establishment of Special Court falls within the domain of the State Government who in consultation with the High Court set up such Courts as per their requirement from their own resources in accordance with Section 14 of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) {PoA} Amendment Act, 2015. The Act further empowers the State Government to specify for each district, a Court of Session to be a Special Court for the purpose in Districts where less number of cases under this Act are recorded. The number of special courts set up by various States during the last three years including the current year and the number of cases decided and pending in these courts are not maintained centrally.
