Question : SHARE OF IT IN GDP



(a) the income earned from Information Technology industry during the first half of the current financial year and its percentage to the Gross Domestic Product;

(b) the income likely to be earned during the second half of the year; and

(c) the details of the concrete steps proposed to be takne by the Government to maximise the income from this industry during the next three years?

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO.357 FOR 13-12-2000 REGARDING SHARE OF I.T. IN GDP

(a): As per the available estimates, the dominant sector of Information Technology Industry (software production) grossed a revenue of Rs.17,150 crores during the first half of current financial year (April 2000-September 2000) against Rs.10,860 crores for the corresponding period in 1999-2000.
IT Production (computers and software) constituted 1.52 percent of the Gross Domestic Product in the year 1999-2000 as per available data.
(b): As per estimates, the software industry is likely to gross a revenue of Rs.21,400 crores in the second half of the current financial year (October 2000-March 2001).
