(a) whether Government is aware that all the tents in Kolkata maidan are forced to close down for fifteen days at a particular time of the year by the army;
(b) if so, the details and the reasons therefor;
(c) whether the Government proposes to do away with the system of closing down of tents in Kolkata maidan; and
(d) if so, the details thereof?

IN THE MINISTRY OF DEFENCE
(a) & (b): The Kolkata Maidan is closed from 1st October to 15th October every year as per the Notification No. G-1158/MD dated 15th May, 1997 published in the Calcutta Gazette. The closure is carried out in order to “bar” the right of establishment over the Maidan land. It also helps in maintenance and rejuvenation of the greens after extensive use for sporting activities.
