Question : Potential for Developing New and Renewable Energy

(a) whether the development and promotion of New and Renewable Energy resources was raised in the G-20 Summit recently, if so, the details thereof;

(b) whether targets have been fixed for New and Renewable Energy Resources and if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether steps have been taken for exchange of technology with other countries for improving efficiency and reducing production cost of power generated through new and renewable resources and if so, the details thereof and the action taken thereon; and

(d) the other measures taken / proposed to be taken by the Government to develop affordable non-conventional energy resources of energy?

Statement referred to in reply to Parts (a),(b),(c)&(d) of the Lok Sabha Starred Question No. 172 for 10.12.2015

(a): Yes, Madam. Development and promotion of New and Renewable Energy resources was raised in the G-20 Summit held in Antalya, during 15-16 November, 2015. The G20 Leader’s Communiqué, (Paragraph No. 23) mentioned that “increasing investments in clean energy technologies and supporting related research and development activities will be important and endorsed the G20 Toolkit of Voluntary Options for Renewable Energy Deployment”.

(b): Government of India announced that India has set a target of 175 GW renewable energy capacity comprising of 100 GW solar, 60 GW Wind, 10 GW Biomass and 5 GW Small Hydro Power by 2022.

(c)&(d): The Ministry has established bilateral cooperation with various developed countries including G20 Member States which includes technological cooperation. Indian Technical and Research Institutions are collaborating with leading technical and research institutions in developed countries such as Fraunhofer Research Institute, Germany, National Research Energy Laboratory (NREL), U.S.A. etc.
