Question : INCOMPLETE IRRIGATION PROJECTS



(a) whether a number of irrigation projects are running behind their original schedule;

(b) if so, the details thereof, State-wise;

(c) whether the Government are considering inviting private participation to complete the said projects; and

(d) if so, the details thereof?

(a) to (d) A Statement is laid on the Table of the House.


Statement referred to in reply to parts (a) to (d) of Lok Sabha Starred Question No.17 for answer on 18-11-2002 regarding incomplete irrigation projects.


(a) to (d) There are a number of irrigation projects which are running behind their original schedule. As per the review of ongoing projects it has been found that 159 Major, 242 Medium and 89 Extention, Renovation and modernization (ERM) projects are incomplete most of which are behind schedule. State-wise details of ongoing projects is given in Annexure.


Irrigation being a State subject the planning, funding, execution, operation and maintenance of irrigation projects is done by the State Governments themselves as per their own priorities. No proposal for private participation for completion of such projects has been received from the any of State Governments.
