Question : TRANSPORT POLICY



(a) whether the Government had undertaken a comprehensive review of the transport sector;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether many of the recommendations of the Transport Policy Development Committee have not been implemented:

(d) if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor;

(e) whether there is an urgent need to develop a comprehensive policy for road transport in the country; and

(f) if so, the steps taken by the Government in this regard?

THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF ROAD TRANSPORT AND HIGHWAYS(SHRI MAHADEO SINGH KHANDELA)

(a)&(b)Transport sector encompasses all modes of transport i.e. Railways, Shipping, Civil Aviation and Road Transport. The Government has set up a National Transport Development Policy Committee under the chairmanship of Shri Rakesh Mohan to comprehensively review the transport sector.

(c)&(d)So far as this Ministry is concerned no recommendation of the Transport Policy Development Committee is pending for implementation.

(e)&(f) Keeping in view the need of the road transport sector, the Government has already initiated necessary process to finalise a National Road Transport Policy. Comments of the States/UTs on the National Road Transport Policy recommended by a Committee constituted under the chairmanship of Shri D. Thangaraj, the then Principal Secretary, Govt. of Karnataka have been invited and also received from some of the States/UTs. Comments/views of the concerned line Ministries/Departments have also been received.
