Question : Upgradation of Airports in Tamil Nadu

(a) the details and present status of upgradation and improvement of existing airports undertaken in the country, including Tamil Nadu;
(b) the time by which expansion of Chennai International Airport would be completed and the schedule of completion, phase-wise;
(c) the details and the present status of expansion of Coimbatore airport and the funds spent thereon so far; and
(d) the time by which the said projects are likely to be completed?

(a) Expansion and upgradation of airports is an ongoing process and is undertaken by Airports Authority of India (AAI) depending on the availability of land, commercial viability, socio-economic considerations, traffic demand/willingness of airlines to operate to/from such airports etc. AAI has planned development of new airports and expansion/upgradation of existing airports at an estimated cost of around Rs. 25,000 crore by the year 2025 which includes expansion and modification of existing terminals, new terminals, expansion or strengthening of existing runways, aprons, airport navigation services (ANS), control towers, technical blocks etc across the country, including Tamil Nadu.;

(b): The expansion/modernization of Chennai International Airport has been undertaken in two phases. Phase I of the project has achieved 83% of physical progress with Projected Date of Completion (PDC) in June 2022. The PDC for Phase II is June 2024.;

(c) & (d): At Coimbatore International Airport, the construction work of additional Apron for parking five Category C type of Aircraft and extension of apron for two ATRs has been completed in August 2021 at an expenditure of Rs. 25.28 crore.
