Question : PRINTING OF ONE THOUSAND RUPEE NOTE



(a) whether the Government have stopped printing of one thousand rupee note sometimes back;

(b) if so, the reasons therefor;

(c) whether the Government propose to restart the printing of one thousand rupee note again; and

(d) if so, the time by which this note is likely to be circulated?

Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance (Shri Balasaheb Vikhe Patil)

(a): Rupees 1000 denomination note was demonetised in the year 1978 and since then its printing was stopped.

(b): The decision to demonetise high denomination notes including Rs.1000 note, was taken in 1978, as it was then felt that these notes facilitated illicit transfer of money for financing transactions which were harmful to the national economy.

(c): Yes, Sir.

(d): Rupees 1000 note is expected to be put in circulation shortly.
