Question : Funding of IITs

(a) the details of the funds including scholarship spent on the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) students by the Government during the last three years and the current year;

(b) the amount of revenue likely to be generated after the hike in fees in each of the Sixteen IITs;

(c) whether the Government has adopted any reform policy regarding placement of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) students during the last three years; and

(d) if so, the details thereof;

(a) : The Ministry of Human Resource Development releases funds under Plan and Non-plan grant to the IITs for meeting recurring and non-recurring expenditure. The recurring component includes payment of scholarship and purchase of equipments. The details of fund released to IITs during the last three years including the current year are as under:-

The release of funds for the current year is underway.

(b) : The revised fee is applicable only to the undergraduate fee paying students who will take admission in IITs from 2016-17 onwards. All SC/ST/EBC/PH candidates have been exempted from paying the fee. Postgraduate and research scholars are paid scholarships/fellowships and are also charged tuition fee.


(c) & (d): No, Madam. However, IITs are academically and functionally autonomous and are competent to decide such matters, including approaches and policy on opportunities for placement.
