Question : ELECTRONIC VOTING MACHINE



(a) the number of voters who have voted through voting machines in each State during the recent election of Lok Sabha, Assemblies and Panchayats;

(b) whether the Government are considering to make mandatory use of Electronic Voting Machine in the elections;

(c) if so, the details thereof;

(d) the steps taken by the Government to provide voting through machines in all the States so that fair election can take place in the country; and

(e) the expenditure likely to be incurred for the purchase of voting machines for each State?

(a) : A statement containing data regarding the number of voters who voted through electronic Voting Machines in recent elections to Lok Sabha and States` Legislative Assemblies is laid on the Table of the House. Elections to Panchayats is a state subject, conducted by the State Election Commissions, and not by the Election Commission of India and hence no information is maintained by the Government in this regard.

(b) : No, Sir.

(c) : Does not arise.

(d) and (e) : A proposal to purchase additional 1,50,000 Electronic Voting Machines for use in the elections to certain States` Legislative Assemblies scheduled to be held during the next year has been received by the Government from the Election Commission of India and the same is being examined. A total expenditure of Rs.150 crores has been estimated by the election Commission of India for the purpose. State-wise estimate of expenditure has not been made by the election Commission in this regard.
