Question : HUMAN DEVELOPMENT INDEX



(a) whether India stands at 132nd place out of the 174 countries of the world in then list of Human development Index for 1999;

(b) if not, the facts in this regard;

(c) whether the noted scholar Dr. Swaminathan had given some suggestions for implementation to being the country at 50th place from 132nd by 2000;and

(d) if so, the reaction of the Government thereto?

(a) to (d): The Human Development Report, 1999 brought out by the United Nation’s development Programme (UNDP), New York has placed India at 132nd position. The department is, however, not aware of any suggestions made to improve India’s Human Development India ranking by 2000.
