Question : SETTING UP OF SCHOOLS OF EDUCATION IN CENTRAL UNIVERSITIES



(a) whether the Government has any proposal to set up about 30 schools of education in all Central Universities;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) the modalities for setting up these schools and duration of the study therein; and

(d) the total number of students to be admitted in each school?

(a) to (c): Under the newly launched Scheme of Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching, it has been decided to set up 30 Schools of Education in Central Universities. University Grants Commission (UGC) has also been impressing upon the Central Universities and other Universities to establish Department of Education and conduct programmes for preparation of Teacher Educators. UGC has requested all the public funded universities to set up department of education and strengthen the existing ones to fulfill their obligations towards Teacher education. The UGC has requested the universities to undertake not only the pre-service teacher training programme but also innovative teachers training programmes and programmes relating to curriculum development, research, pedagogic studies, assessment and evaluation, professional development of teacher educators etc. Besides, the universities have also been requested to revisit their curricula in the light of the recommendations of the National Curriculum Framework on Teacher Education (NCFTE), 2009.

(d): The Central Universities being autonomous institutions are competent to take decisions on academic matters including the intake of students admitted in a particular course within the norms prescribed by the statutory bodies if any.
