Question : TRAINING AND REHABILITATION OF HANDICAPPED



(a) the details of the assistance provided and work undertaken in the field of education, training and rehabilitation of physically and mentally handicapped persons during the last three years in the country;

(b) the State-wise details of beneficiaries in the said period; and

(c) the schemes launched or proposed to be launched by the Government for the welfare of physically and mentally handicapped persons during 2002-2003?

(a) & (b) The National Institutes for disabilities run several programmes including special schools, rehabilitation services and vocational training programmes. Besides, under the Scheme to Promote Voluntary Action for persons with Disabilities and Scheme of Assistance to Disabled Persons for Purchase/Fitting of aids and Appliances(ADIP) Non-Governmental Organizations are providing education, training and rehabilitation services to the persons with disabilities. The beneficiaries during 1999-2000, 2000- 2001 and 2001-2002 are 5.76 lakhs, 6.43 lakhs, and 6.47 lakhs respectively.


(c) A new programme entitled `National Scholarships for Persons With Disabilities` is being started during 2002-2003 in addition to the existing schemes and programmes being run for the persons with disabilities.
