Question : NEW UREA PLANTS



(a) whether the Government proposes to set up new urea manufacturing plants in coal rich States;

(b) if so, the details thereof and the locations identified for the purpose, location wise;

(c) the time by which these plants are likely to be set up and made operational;

(d) whether the Government also proposes to use the technology of producing urea from coal as is being done in China, and

(e) if so, the details thereof

(a) & (b): Yes Madam. At present, Talcher unit of Fertilizer Corporation of India Limited (FCIL) in the State of Odisha is being revived based on coal gasification technology. This unit is being revived by a consortium of Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) namely Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers Ltd. (RCF), Coal India Ltd. (CIL), GAIL India Limited and FCIL.

(c): The project is likely to be completed by December. 2018.

(d)& (e): The technology to be used for coal gasification is yet to be finalised.
