Question : Centres of Excellence

(a) whether the Government has approved 4 Centres of Excellence for Textile Machinery, Machine Tools, Welding Technology and Smart pumps in the country and if so, the details thereof, location and State-wise;
(b) the criteria adopted for setting up of these Centres of Excellence and selection of the location/ site;
(c) whether any roadmap has been prepared by the Government in this regard; and
(d) if so, the details thereof along with the new Centres of Excellence likely to be setup in the next one year?

MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF HEAVY INDUSTRIES AND PUBLIC ENTERPRISES (SHRI BABUL SUPRIYO)

(a): Under the Scheme for Enhancement of Competitiveness in the Indian Capital Goods Sector, the following Centres of Excellence (CoE) have been approved for Textile Machinery, Machine Tools, Welding Technology and Smart Pumps in the country:

(i) CoEs for Textile Machinery at Central Manufacturing Technology Institute (CMTI), Bangalore, Karnataka for developing Hi-tech Shuttleless Looms, and at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi for Development of Textile Machinery,

(ii) CoE for Machine Tools at Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai, Tamil Nadu for development of 11 machine tools technologies,

(iii) CoE for Welding Technology at PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu for developing 3 welding technologies, and

(iv) CoE for Smart Pump at Siā€™Tarc, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu for developing smart submersible pumps.

(b): Under the Scheme for Enhancement of Competitiveness in the Indian Capital Goods Sector, Centres of Excellence were set up as per Scheme Guidelines on the basis of applications received from educational and technology Institutes.

(c) & (d): The Scheme for Enhancement of Competitiveness in the Indian Capital Goods Sector has, inter-alia, provisions for increasing technological depth of the domestic Capital Goods Sector by way of a component for setting up Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Technological Development. The proposals for setting up of CoE from the institutes are examined and processed, as and when received, according to Scheme guidelines.
