(a) whether the number of accidents on National Highways has drastically gone up during the last three years;

(b) if so, the details thereof alongwith the reasons therefor, State-wise and year-wise;

(c) the compensation given by the Government to the victims` families;

(d) whether the Government have taken any steps to widen the National Highways and to prevent encroachments as well as accidents on the National Highways; and

(a)&(b) : As per information available the number of road accidents on National Highways have increased from 1997 to 1998 but during the year 1999 these have gone down. The total number of road accidents, persons killed and injured during the years 1997, 1998 and 1999, state-wise and year-wise is annexed.

(c) : The compensation is given on the basis of structured formula provided in the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988

(d)&(e) : Widening of National Highways, Prevention of accidents and prevention of encroachment is a continuing process. Steps taken to prevent accidents are taken into consideration while formulating proposals for development and maintenance of National Highways (NHs). These include undertaking various improvement works like widening to 4 lanes, strengthening existing two lane pavements, construction of bypass, geometric improvements and also provide road signs, markings etc. to make roads safer. Prevention of encroachments is dealt under `The Public Premises (eviction of unauthorised occupants)` Act, 1971 through the concerned State Governments.
