Question : RECHARGE OF GROUND WATER IN KARNATAKA



(a) whether Central Ground Water Board in association with his Ministry has decided to implement various schemes to raise the ground water level in Karnataka;

(b) if so, whether any concrete proposals in this regard have been worked out;

(c) if so, the details thereof; and

(d) the time by which the said schemes are likely to be implemented?

(a) to (d)` The Central Ground Water Board under the Ministry of Water Resources have carried out ground water recharge experiments and rain water harvesting on pilot basis in various states, including Karnataka under its Central Sector Scheme on “Studies on Artificial Recharge of Ground Water”. The Government have earmarked funds amounting to Rs. 25.00 crore for the scheme during the IX Five Year Plan. In Karnataka, the Board has completed artificial recharge studies in Gaurididanaur and Mulbagal Talukas. The Board has also approved a proposal of the Bangalore University at a cost of Rs. 13.75 lakh for undertaking various recharge works in the University Campus to improve the water availability in the area. The work is expected to be completed by June, 2001.
