(a) The 7th meeting of Supervisory Committee on Cauvery was held on 19.9.2016. As there was no consensus on quantum of release, the Chairman of the Supervisory Committee having taken into account the daily inflows into the reservoirs of Karnataka, drinking water requirement of the people of Karnataka and the requirement of Samba crop in Tamil Nadu and also the significant deficit in rainfall from June onwards, as brought out by Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) during the current and previous year, decided to ask the State of Karnataka to release water at the rate of 3000 cusecs per day for 10 days from 21.09.2016 till 30.09.2016. The Chairman of the Committee also asked the State of Tamil Nadu to release water proportionately to Union Territory of Puducherry.
(b) On the plea of Tamil Nadu in the Apex Court, the Hon’ble Supreme Court, passed directions to Karnataka to release waters at Billigundulu site from 7/9/2016 to 31/12/2016, as detailed in the following table:

(c) This Ministry vide notification dated 19.02.2013 notified order of Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) award dated 05.02.2007 to make it effective and binding on party States. The party States have filed Civil Appeals in the Apex Court against the order of CWDT dated 05.02.2007. On 9.12.2016, the Hon’ble Supreme Court vide its judgment has upheld the maintainability of the Civil Appeals related to Cauvery dispute filed by the party states. As on date, the matter is subjudice.
