Question : Use of Poor Quality Insecticides and Pesticides

(a) the number of cases of detection of poor quality insecticides and pesticides in the country during the last three years along with the details of such cases, State-wise;

(b) whether poisonous pesticides are available despite the monitoring mechanism of the Government; and

(c) if so, the steps taken/being taken to check it?

(a): As reported by the State Governments, during last 03 years, 2017-18 to 2019-20 (till January 2020); 1,91,365 pesticide samples have been analyzed and 2584 prosecutions have been launched in cases where samples were found to be of poor quality. State wise details are as Annexure-I.

(b) & (c): As per the Insecticides Act, 1968, the monitoring of quality of pesticides is a shared responsibility between the Central and State Governments. Central Government and State Governments have notified 191 and 10946 Insecticides Inspectors respectively to check the quality of pesticides. Action is initiated under the provisions of the Insecticides Act, 1968 against those samples which are found to be of poor quality.
