Question : Milk Production

(a) the quantum of total milk production and consumption in the country during the current year, State/UT-wise;
(b) whether the Government imports and/or exports milk and milk products to meet the requirement of the country;
(c) the steps taken by the Government to encourage milk production and the details of the results thereof during the period 2001 to 2015;
(d) the steps taken by the Government to produce milk as per the requirement and to make the country free from the use of adulterated milk;
(e) whether the Government proposes to provide milch animals to the poor farmers of the rural areas of the country to promote the production of milk; and
(f) if so, the details thereof?

ANSWER

(a) As per latest available survey report, the milk production during 2014-15, State-wise, across the country is placed at Annexure. Data regarding consumption of milk in the country is not available with the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying & Fisheries.
(b) No Madam.
(c) & (d) The Department is implementing the following schemes to increase milk production in the country:-
i. National Dairy Plan (Phase-I)
ii. National Programme for Bovine Breeding and Dairy Development
iii. Dairy Entrepreneurship Development Scheme
The milk production & per capita availability of milk in the country has increased from 80.6 million metric tonnes and 217 gm/day in 2000-01 to 146.3 million metric tonnes and 322 gm/day in 2014-15 respectively.
(e) & (f) The Department is implementing “Dairy Entrepreneurship Development Scheme” (DEDS) from 01.09.2010 through National Bank for Agriculture & Rural Development (NABARD) in which back ended capital subsidy (25% of the project cost for General Category and 33% for SC/ST beneficiaries) is provided under bankable projects through eligible financial institutions, subject to the norms of the scheme. One of the component of DEDS is establishment of small dairy unit of 2 to 10 crossbred cows or indigenous cows/graded buffaloes.
