Question : COMPENSATION TO FARMERS



(a) whether the farmers and residents who have lost their land for building dams are yet to get compensation for the same;

(b) if so, the reasons therefor, State/ UT-wise;

(c) whether only big industrial houses and urban cities are being supplied water from these dams being constructed at public cost;

(d) if so, the details thereof, State/UT-wise; and

(e) the action taken by the Government thereon?

(a) & (b) Water is a State subject and it is the primary responsibility of the State governments to take necessary measures to conceive, plan, implement, develop and manage water resources projects including land acquisition and compensation of land. As per Central Water Commission, cases of non-payment of compensation to farmers and residents who have lost their land for building dams have not been referred to Central Water Commission.

(c), (d) & (e) As mentioned above, priorities of distribution of water to its various uses also lies with the respective State/UT Governments.
