Question : ELECTRICITY GENERATED FROM GARBAGE WASTE



(a) the quantum of electricity generated from the garbage/waste in the country including Maharashtra during the last three years and the current year and the financial assistance provided by the Government for the purpose, States/UT-wise;

(b) whether the Government is contemplating an innovative concept for promoting waste to energy programme in association with the solid waste management companies, municipal corporations and technology institutes;

(c) if so, the details thereof;

(d) whether the Government is contemplating to give incentives to the Institutes, companies and Municipal Corporations for investing in waste-to-energy technologies and programmes on the line of carbon credit points, and

(e) if so, the details thereof?

(a):The State-wise estimated quantum of electricity generated from projects on energy from urban and industrial wastes in the country, including the State of Maharashtra, during the last three years and the current year, and the break-up of financial assistance provided during this period are given at Annexure I.

(b)&(c): With a view to encourage cities and municipalities to take up waste-to-energy projects through different instruments such as viability gap funding, repayable grant and low cost capital, the Department of Economic Affairs has prepared draft scheme and guidelines. A recent report of the Task Force on Waste-to-Energy has highlighted the need for an integrated approach towards Municipal Solid Waste Management, stressing on the reduction and segregation of waste at source.

(d)&(e): The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is promoting setting up of projects on energy from waste under a Programme on Energy from Urban, Industrial and Agricultural Wastes/Residues. The Programme provides for financial and fiscal incentives as per the details given at Annexure II, however, there is no proposal for linking incentives with carbon credits.
