(a) The total number of Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) installed in the country are 706 including Assam. The details of stations are in Annexure-1.
The AWS observes and communicates real time weather observations on hourly basis via a local link to a computer system or via telecommunications or satellite systems. Most automatic weather stations have Thermometer for measuring temperature, Anemometer for measuring wind speed, Hygrometer for measuring humidity, Barometer for measuring pressure. Some of them even have rain gauge for measuring rainfall known as automatic rain gauge (ARG).

(c) IMD has installed 125 AWS network all over India during 2006-2007 with satellite communication (Pseudo Random Bit Sequence (PRBS) technology).
IMD has again installed 500 AWS network all over India during 2008-2012 with satellite communication (Time-division multiple access (TDMA) technology).
IMD has purchased 300 Nos. Data logger with dual communication (satellite as well as General Packet Radio Service (GPRS)) and will upgrade 300 Nos. of AWS system.
