Question : RESERVATION TO OBC



(a) whether it is necessary to provide certain backward castes the benefit of reservation to maintain balanced development in the country;

(b) if so, the reaction of the Government thereto;

(c) whether the Government has identified the castes for which reservation is necessary;

(d) if so, the names of those castes; and

(e) the time by which they are likely to be brought under the ambit of reservation?

(a) & (b): Yes, Sir. The Central Government provides 27% reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in Central Government services and Central Educational Institutions.

(c) to (e): The Government of India notified castes/communities in the Central List of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) for different States/Union Territories after examining the advices tendered by the National Commission for Backward Classes under Section 9(1) of the NCBC Act, 1993. Inclusion of castes/communities in the Central List of OBCs is a continuous process. The NCBC tender advice to the Central Government to this effect from time to time. Till date 2403 entries (by way of castes, their synonyms, sub castes etc.) have been notified in the Central List of Other Backward Classes for different States/ Union Territories.
