Question : Steel Plants

(a) the total number of steel plants in the country along with the names of the steel projects on which work is currently going on;

(b) whether the Government proposes to set up new steel plants in Haryana in near future to generate/promote employment;

(c) if so, the time by which the said plants are likely to be set up and if not, the reasons therefor;

(d) whether the import of steel has increased during the last few years; and

(e) if so, the details thereof along with its impact on domestic market and indigenous steel?

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (A) TO (E) OF THE LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO. *181 FOR ANSWER ON 02/12/2019 ASKED BY SHRI DHARAMBIR SINGH, MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT REGARDING “STEEL PLANTS”

(a) The total number of steel plants in the country is 977. Work is currently going on in NMDC Steel Plant in Nagarnar, Chattisgarh which is a greenfield CPSE project.

(b)&(c) No, Sir. Steel is a deregulated sector where market forces and commercial considerations are allowed to decide regarding construction and location of new steel plants.

(d) Yes, Sir but India has become a net exporter in the current year.

(e) The import of steel has increased marginally in the last 3 years from 7.23 Million Tonnes in 2016-17 to 7.83 Million Tonnes in 2018-19 as shown table below:-

Domestic production has consistently increased regardless of such imports. In the current year, country is a net exporter. To counter import of cheap steel, anti-dumping duties have been imposed on various grades of steel which were dumped into the country. Import of steel grades which are not manufactured in adequate quantity in the country is essential for supporting manufacturing sector.
