(a) & (b) : Import of 13.45 million tonnes of coal has been planned during 2005-06 in
order to sustain generation in the thermal power plants and to bridge the gap between
demand and supply of coal from indigenous sources and to build the stock upto
reasonable level.
(c) : The details of coal imported by the thermal power plants during the last
three years are given in Annexure.
(d) : The coal is being imported from South Africa, Indonesia, Australia &
China. The Gross Calorific Value (GCV) of imported coal is generally higher than 5300
Kcal/Kg.
The CIF price of imported coal varies in different periods from 50 to 70
U.S. Dollars (approximately) per metric tonne depending on demand-supply position in
the international market.
(e) : The imported coal is superior due to its lower ash content and higher
calorific value.
