Question : WORKSHOP ON ROAD SECTOR



(a) whether the National Highways Authority of India have recently conducted a two day workshop for foreign construction companies on the investment prospects in the road sector;

(b) if so, the details of the major issues discussed at this workshop;

(c) whether any consensus has been evolved on the conflicting interests and objectives of both the National Highways Authority of India and the Contractors;

(d) if so the details thereof;

(e) whether the National Highways Authority of India has agreed to cancel new projects based on toll-collection; and

(f) if so, the reasons therefor ?

(a) Yes, Sir.

(b) The major issues discussed in the workshop held in February, 2001, were business plans for development of highways in the next 10 years, policy measures related to regulation, taxation and repatriation of money and contract management.

(c)&(d) The aim of the workshop was only to inform and acquaint the contracting industry on business opportunities, working environment, availability of technical manpower and resources, and initiatives taken by Government for working of international contracting industry.
