Question : Supply of Safe Drinking Water to Rural Population

(a) whether any scheme has been implemented to supply safe drinking water to the rural population in the country;
(b) if so, the details thereof;
(c) whether any scheme/project has been implemented to meet the target of providing tap connections to every households by 2024; and
(d) if so, the details and outcome thereof?

(a) to (d) Government of India in partnership with States, is implementing Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) – Har Ghar Jal since August, 2019 after restructuring and subsuming erstwhile National Rural Drinking Water Supply (NRDWP) to provide potable water in adequate quantity of prescribed quality on regular and long-term basis to every rural household through tap water connection, by 2024. The estimated outlay of the Mission is Rs. 3.60 lakh Crore.
At the time of announcement of Jal Jeevan Mission on 15th August, 2019, about 3.23 Crore rural households were reported to have tap water connections. Since then, 3.41 Crore rural households have been provided tap water connections. As a result, as on 8.2.2021, out of 19.18 Crore rural households across the country, 6.64 Crore (34.63%) households are reported to have potable tap water supply in their homes.
