Answer given by the minister

MINISTER OF STATE (IC) FOR LABOUR AND EMPLOYMENT (SHRI BANDARU DATTATREYA)

(a):-The number and status of medical colleges under Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) in the Country is at Annex.

(b) to (e): Medical Education is not the core function of ESIC. The focus of ESIC has to be on providing medical services to its members. Therefore, it has been decided that ESIC will not set up any new medical college or new medical institution. However, the ESIC will continue to run 03 Medical Colleges at Rajajinagar, Bangalore (Karnataka), K.K. Nagar, Chennai (Tamil Nadu), Joka, Kolkata (West Bengal) & one Dental College at Rohini, New Delhi. Ongoing PG courses would also continue on similar lines.

Concerned State Governments have been requested to take over other under construction medical college projects. In the interim, ESIC will complete under construction medical college projects through its own resources.
