Question : REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE OF IRRIGATION DAMS



(a) the details of dams damaged in the country, State-wise;

(b) the financial assistance provided to States for the repair and maintenance of irrigation dams and the list of dams provided such assistance, State-wise;

(c) the meausres taken to clean and renovate ponds at Gram Sabha level under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS);

(d) the details of proposals under Repair, Renovation and Restoration (RRR) sent by Maharashtra and Rajasthan; and

(e) the details of the proposals sanctioned and rejected, and the reasons for pendency of the pending proposals?

(a) & (b) Dams are owned and maintained by the concerned dam owners which are mostly the State Governments, and the details of their maintenance, repair and renovations are available with the concerned dam owners.

Govt. of India has taken up “Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (DRIP)” with funding assistance from the World Bank for rehabilitation of about 223 large dams in four states, namely Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. State-wise details of cost allocations to the participating States and Central Water Commission for the project is given as under:

(c) As per information furnished by the Department of Rural Development, Ministry of Rural Development, provisions have been made for renovation of traditional water bodies including desilting of irrigation tanks and other water bodies in Schedule 1 of MGNREGA 2005. Section 16 (1) of MGNREGA provides that Gram Panchayats shall be responsible for identification of projects in the Gram Panchayat area to be taken up under the scheme as per the recommendations of the Gram Sabha and Ward Sabhas.

(d) & (e) Details of proposals sent by the States of Maharashtra & Rajasthan, the proposals sanctioned and reasons for non-sanction of proposals are as under:
