(a) whether the Union Government proposes to extend the power generation capacity of Almati Dam;

(b) if so, the details thereof; and

(c) if not, the reasons therefor?

Answer given by the minister

THE MINISTER OF POWER ( SHRI SUSHILKUMAR SHINDE )

(a) : No, Sir.

(b) : Question does not arise.

(c) : The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) had prepared a feasibility report of Upper Krishna Cascade Hydro-electric Project (2x35+2x65+2x35=270 MW) in September, 2003 to utilize the surplus releases from Almati Dam through Narayanpur reservoir of Krishna river. However, as there was no commitment from the Government of Karnataka on the quantum of regulated water for power generation downstream of Narayanpur dam and the project being found economically unviable, NHPC decided to close the project.
