DEVELOPMENT OF MAJULI ISLAND


2342. SHRI NABA KUMAR SARANIA:

Will the Minister of CULTURE be pleased to state:

(a) whether the Centre has taken steps to expedite the proposal of world heritage site status for Majuli Island located in the Brahmaputra river in Assam;
(b) if so, the details thereof;
(c) whether the Centre is planning to develop Majuli Island as a tourist destination, especially with the help of cruise tourism; and
(d) if so, the details thereof?

ANSWER

MINISTER OF STATE, CULTURE AND TOURISM (INDEPENDENT CHARGE) AND MINISTER OF STATE, CIVIL AVIATION

(a) & (b): Yes Madam, The Government of Assam has been requested to revise the nomination dossier on Majuli Island as per the latest Operational Guidelines of UNESCO. Archaeological Survey of India is ready to extend technical support in this regard.


(c) & (d): There is no proposal before the Ministry of Tourism to develop Majuli Island of Assam as a world heritage site for tourism. However, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India has sanctioned the projects (i) “Development of Heritage & Eco tourism Resort at Majuli” for Rs. 3.82 crore and River front development along Brahamputra for Rs. 0.30 crore in the year 2002-03; and (ii) Destination development of Brahamputra River front and Cruise Vessel on Brahamputra for Rs. 3.65 crore in the year 2006-07 to the Government of Assam.
