M., (Forward Block) Tamil Nadu-Ramanathapuram—1971, Son of Shri Thiru Ocha Thevar; b. at Pappapatti, Mudurai District, 1926; ed. at Usilampaiti High School and Madurai College, Madurai; m. Smt. Raniammal in 1949; 3 s. and 2 d.; Agriculturist; associated with Congress upto 1946; left Congress in 1946 and joined Forward Block the same year; at present acting Chairman, All India Forward Block; Member, Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, 1952-57, 1957-62, 1962-67 and 1967-71. Social activities.—Formerly member of the Student Congress, Social Service League; took active part in the uplift of Harijans and Backward Classes and their education and employment; founder President of three Colleges, (i) Thiru Muthuramalinga, Thevar College, Usilampatti (Madurai District), (ii) Thiru Muthuramalinga Thevar College, Kamudhi (Ramanathapuram District) and (iii) Thiru Muthuramalinga Thevar College, Neelidanallur (Tirunelveli District). Favourite pastime and recreation.—Sports, doing research in Tamil etymology; takes keen interest in Indian culture, civilization and Vedanta philosophy.
