JHARKHANDE RAI, SHRI, B.A. [C.P.I.—Uttar Pradesh, Ghosi, 1980] s. of late Shri Radhe Rai; b. at Amila Village, Azamgarh District, 1914: ed. at Government High School, Basti, Government Jubilee High School, Gorakhpur, Ewing Christian College, Allahabad and Allahabad University; m. Smt. Kamla Devi, 1926; 1 s. and 1 d.; Agriculturist and Social & Political Worker; previously associated with Hindustan Socialist Republican Army (H.S.R.A.) and Revolutionary Socialist Party; suffered imprisonment for 8 years during the British regime; awarded imprisonment for 21 years for taking part in Pipridih Conspiracy case, Ghazipur Arms Conspiracy Cane and Lucknow Conspiracy Case and was released after Independence; imprisoned 18 times after Independence; Cabinet Minister for Food, Uttar Pradesh S.V.D. Government in 1967 and resigned from the Cabinet owing to differences on the issue of distribution of land to landless; President, (i) Intermediate College, Amila Aramgarh and (ii) Intermediate College, Sonadih, Aramgarh; Treasurer, All India Kisan Sabha, Feroz Shah Road, New Delhi; Vice-President, U.P. Kisan Sabha, Lucknow; Member, Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, 1952-68; Chairman, Public Accounts Committee, U.P. Legislative Assembly for 21- years; Member, (i) Fourth Lok Sabha, 1968-70 and (ii) Fifth Lok Sabha, 1971-77. Social activities: Library work; relief work; emancipation movements of down-trodden. Favourite pastime and recreation: Reading, writing and gardening. Special interests: Political discussions.
