Shrimati Edila Gaitonde, June 5, 1948; Surgeon; Member, Board of Surgeons, Medical Council, Lisbon; President, National Congress (Goa), 1960-61; Since returning to Goa in 1948, actively worked for Goa's freedom; Resigned from the post of Surgeon-Director of Semi-Govt. Hospital; Arrested & deported to Portugal in Feb., 1954; Released in the middle of 1955 & returned to India via London; Since then Hon. Surgeon in Irwin Hospital, Delhi, & Senior Scientific Officer in Indian Council of Medical Research; Resigned the latter post after Goa's independence; In 1961 undertook a tour of Morocco, England, U.S.A., Brazil, Sweden and U.S.S.R. to create public opinion in support of Goan freedom and also of other Portuguese colonies; Was Secretary-General of the Conference of Nationalist Organisation of Portuguese Colonies held in Casablanca in April, 1961; One of the conveners of the ad-hoc Goa Pradesh Committee of the Indian National Congress. Favourite pastime and recreation: Playing Chess. Special interests: The Problem of Cancer, Public Health, International affairs. Travels abroad: Portugal, Spain, France, England, Morocco, U.S.A., Brazil, Sweden and U.S.S.R. Publications: (1) Atomic Energy in Medicine; (2) The Goa Problem.
