Prof. Saifuddin Soz, the Union Minister for Water Resources presided over the 28th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of National Institute of Hydrology (NIH), Roorkee here today. Addressing on the occasion, the Minister said that the NIH was doing commendable job in studying the problems of Hydrology, particularly improving the system of irrigation and flood management in the country. A number of scientists attended today’s meeting and made several suggestions for bringing in efficiency in the system of irrigation and flood management in the country.
Prof. Soz, particularly expressed satisfaction that the NIH had responded positively to his suggestions during the last Annual General Meeting that the Institute should take up a comprehensive study in examining the snow melt at the glaciers and accordingly the National Institute of Hydrology had instituted studies regarding snow melt at Gangotri (in Uttarakhand) and Zanskar (in Ladakh region). The Minister was told that the first phase of the study would be completed in June this year. Prof. Soz said that it would be interesting to understand from these studies as to whether climate change had impacted adversely on the glaciers or not.
Smt. Gauri Chatterjee, Secretary and Shri S. Manoharan, Additional Secretary, senior officers of the Ministry of Water Resources, the Chairman, Central Ground Water Board and many scientists participated in the meeting.
Dr. K. D. Sharma, Director, NIH gave a presentation on the working and achievements of the Institute and said that the scientists of the Institute had contributed 44 research papers that were published in prestigious journals at the international level. The Minister congratulated the scientists working at the Institute.
