REGARDING TRAIN ACCIDENTS.
(a) to (d): There have been 61 consequential train accidents during the period from November
2005 to January 2006. Accident wise details are annexed at Appendix.
Type wise, cause wise, number of casualties, ex-gratia relief paid to the victims/their
families, loss of railway property and enquiry ordered, are given below:-

(#Figures are provisional).
## Compensation is paid after a claim is filed in the Railway Claims Tribunal and a
decree is awarded. So far, no compensation claim has yet been filed by the victims or
their families. Compensation will be paid when the victims file their claims and Railway
Claims Tribunals give their award.
(e): Out of the above 61 consequential train accidents, 58 have been enquired by departmental
inquiry committees, out of which 57 have been finalized. Out of the 3 consequential train
accidents under purview of the Commissioner of Railway Safety, final report has been received
in two cases and preliminary report has been received in one case. Action against the
responsible officials has been initiated as warranted by the findings.
(f): Safety is the prime concern on Indian Railways and all possible steps are undertaken
to prevent accidents. These measures include safety drives to check on upkeep of assets,
observance of safety norms, and to inculcate safety consciousness amongst the staff.
Social awareness programmes are also undertaken to educate road users.
