Question : Vacant Posts in Medical Colleges

Will the Minister of HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE be pleased to state:

(a) the number of medical seats available and faculty required and working at present in the country both in Private and Government Medical Colleges;

(b) whether the Government is aware that there are acute shortage of faculty/ professors, nurses, technicians etc. in various medical colleges across the country;

(c) if so, the details thereof state/UT-wise and institution-wise;

(d) the details of action taken/proposed to be taken by the Government to fill up large number of vacancies in these medical colleges; and

(e) whether the Government has taken any measures to accord priority/seniority to the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes, Backward class and women in the said institutions, if so, the details thereof?

(a) to (d) There are 29093 and 36090 medical seats (MBBS) in Government and Private Medical Colleges respectively in the country.
Permissions for starting of a medical college/ yearly renewal permission/ recognition of degree is granted by the Central Government on the recommendation made by the Medical Council of India (MCI) after assessment of facilities available as per regulations prescribing minimum requirements in terms of infrastructure, faculty and clinical material. The medical colleges which fail to meet the required standards are not given permission/ renewal permission/ recognition.
The Government does not centrally maintain data of vacant posts in medical colleges. It is for the respective State Governments/ Institutions to fill the vacancies as and when they arise.

(e) The Government Institutions are covered under the reservation policy of the Government.
