Question : EMBANKMENTS IN ASSAM



(a) whether the Government has the latest status report of the embankments and dykes in Assam;

(b) if so, the latest position of the embankments and dykes of the Barak Valley of Assam; and

(c) the measures taken/proposed to be taken to repair the embankments, dykes to control river erosion in the State?

(a) Yes Madam. In the State of Assam, the total embankment length is 4473.82 km. (Brahmaputra & Barak Valley). The latest status of these embankments is stated below:-

(b) In Barak Valley of Assam, the total embankment length is 731 Km. The latest status of these embankments is stated below:-

(c) For repairing of these embankments, dykes and to control erosion in the State, 90 (Ninety) nos. of Schemes amounting to Rs.10258.00 Crores have been formulated by the Water Resources Department, Assam. Out of these 54 nos. of schemes have been recommended by the Brahmaputra Board, another 8 nos. are under process for approval at Brahmaputra Board and another 28 nos. of schemes are under process for approval at CWC, Shillong.

Among the 54 nos. of schemes recommended by the Brahmaputra Board, 12 nos. of Schemes amounting to Rs.183.044 crores have been recommended by Planning Commission and another 7 nos. of schemes amounting to Rs.258.26 crores is under process at Planning Commission.
