STATEMENT

Statement referred to in reply to parts (a),(b),(c),(d)&(e) of the Lok Sabha Starred Question No. 314 for 16.04.2010 regarding Geo-thermal Energy and Small Hydro Power Projects by Shri Nityananda Pradhan

(a): So far, 740 Small Hydro Power (SHP) projects with an aggregate capacity of 2735 MW have been set up in the country. The State wise details are given in Annexure-I.

(b)&(c): The Government has signed Memorandum of Understanding with Governments of Australia,Iceland and Philippines for scientific co-operation, research and to explore the potential of Geo-thermal in India. As far as small hydro power projects are concerned, indigenous technologies are available to set up these projects and no assistance has been sought from the developed countries.

(d): A target of 300 MW during 2010-11 and 350 MW during 2011-12 have been fixed for setting up of small hydro projects. 278 SHP projects aggregating to 769 MW are under implementation.

(e): Small hydro projects are being set up both in public as well as private sector. In order to tap the potential, 23 States have announced their policies to invite private sector to set up SHP projects. They are extending various facilities such as wheeling and banking of power, purchase of power by State utilities as per tariff decided by the State Electricity Regulatory Commission etc. Ministry of New and Renewable Energy Sources is giving capital subsidy to the State Governments and private sector to set up SHP projects. Besides, the Ministry is also supporting training programmes on various technical aspects of SHP development and identification of new potential sites.
